Perspective
What you see depends on your perspective – where you are looking from, where you stand. Your perspective ultimately determines the heights you can scale at any point in time.
Attaining new heights requires a change in perspective.
What is perspective?
Perspective is the way a person sees something. Call it view point, or point of view – the stand point from which a thing is observed, analysed, accepted. Standing at the top of a mountain and looking at an elephant down in a valley would make the elephant look quite tiny. The same elephant will look huge if you were standing by it. Distance, height, angle, and direction, are filtering lenses affecting our perspective. We filter and define events, opportunities, challenges, colleagues, friends, enemies, through these lenses, ultimately determining our response to them.
Perspective and New Heights
Perspective causes a person to classify the opportunity of a lifetime as an inconvenient challenge, while another person sees the same challenge as the opportunity of a lifetime. These differences in perception determine how each responds to the situation, and where it leads them. The one who sees the opportunity of a lifetime will treat it as such, and find a way to milk all the good available in that situation.
Shifting Perspective
“When you change what you believe, you change what you do.” What happens when a person who previously saw a situation as a problem, takes a second look and redefines the situation as an opportunity? Their belief immediately shifts from problem mode into opportunity mode. Their actions will shift into ideas and advantages mode.
A change in perspective leads to new options, new opportunities and possibilities, new allies and alliances. What once seemed like a block could suddenly become leverage.
What about obviously real problems? Fact is, every problem has a silver lining. Finding the silver lining comes from finding the right or best perspective.
We all need a fresh perspective from time to time. Outside or external perspective can be a specially useful for business; to have that ‘fresh eye’ look at a situation or challenge.
